Retrospective View of Plain Upright Films of Acute Abdomen


Abstract
Among 536 patients with diagnosis of acute abdomen who visited the emergency room or outpatient clinic of Kyungpook National University Hospital during April 1962 through March 1963, 144 cases were proven surgically as well as histologically. The single upright film of each of, these 144 cases was reviewed by five radiologists separately.
Correct readings improved from the original 57.7% to 70.8%. If gallbladder diseases, such as, ruptured gallbladder and cholecystitis with or without stones are rejected from the study, the final decision mounts to 75.6%.
The roentgenological diagnosis of gastrc-intestinal perforation is easily made and after the review was accurate in 94. 1% of cases. Initially the correct diagnosis of perforation of the stomach, duodenum and ileum was 100%, 87.8% and 72.7% respectively.
Of the acute abdominal diseases, the most difficult to discriminate are gallbladder diseases and acute appendicitis with or without abscess.
